Designing ethical AI through Indigenous-centred approaches | Research and innovation

To amplify those perspectives, the AI + Society Initiative and CIFAR, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa Research Chair in Technology and Society, hosted a conversation onIndigenous Protocol and AIfeaturing Professor Jason Lewis, a leading expert in the field and the University Research Chair in Computational Media and the Indigenous Future Imaginary at Concordia University.Watch the eventHow can Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies contribute to the global conversation regarding society and AI? How do we broaden discussions regarding the role of technology in society beyond the largely culturally homogenous research labs and Silicon Valley startup culture? How do we imagine a future with A.I. that contributes to the flourishing of all humans and non-humans?  Those are some the questions discussed by Prof Lewis has he reflected on the “Indigenous Protocol and Artificial Intelligence Position Paper” published in the summer of 2020 following a series workshops hosted in the winter and spring of 2019 with the support of CIFAR’s AI and Society Program.

Preserving the Past: AI in Indigenous Language Preservation – Viterbi Conversations in Ethics

Recent breakthroughs in AI have expanded its use to translating endangered Indigenous languages. While it has promising preservation potential, these language technologies highlight the ethical scruples of using AI in cultural preservation. Careful attention is needed to implement AI preservation efforts that respect the sovereignty and cultural values of Indigenous communities.
